The Android Authority portal has discovered a mention of a new feature in the code of the latest YouTube beta that will allow users to adjust the sound quality.

Here's What We Know

YouTube has turned 20 years old!, YouTube has never offered users the option to choose audio quality, but that may soon change.

Android Authority reported that Google is testing such an option and it will work separately from the video quality selection:

Even if a video looks top-notch, its audio quality is up to the content creator and is handled by YouTube. Users have no control over it, but that could change soon. We found lines of code in the latest beta version of the YouTube app that reveal references to user-controlled audio quality settings. This suggests that YouTube may soon allow you to choose between different audio bitrates.

There will likely be three audio bitrate options on the platform:

  • auto - likely to adjust the audio quality depending on the speed of your internet connection;
  • normal - standard YouTube audio quality (probably the current Opus 128kbps format);
  • high - higher bitrate, potentially improving clarity.

The company is yet to comment on these rumours.

It is likely that the new option will be available to YouTube Premium subscribers first, but it may appear in the free version of the service later.
