The Tesla Cybertruck electric pickup truck is having a bad time. In February, its sales in the US fell 32.5% compared to January, totalling just 2,619 units. That's almost half as many as in September 2024, when the model posted its best ever result.

Here's What We Know

Overall, Tesla sales in the U.S. were down 10 percent over the period. As InsideEVs notes, there could be several reasons for this.

Firstly, the personal reputation of the head of the company, Elon Musk. His political activity, in particular his attempts to cut government spending, has caused a wave of protests among the part of the electorate that has traditionally supported Tesla. Some owners are even getting rid of their electric cars, putting sarcastic stickers on them and refusing to buy new cars of the brand. Secondly, the Cybertruck is very different in design from any other car on the market and demand for it may have reached its limit.

Cybertruck sales started to weaken as early as late last year. While Tesla sold about 17,000 pickups in the third quarter, that number dropped to 13,000 in the last three months of 2024. In January, the company even moved some workers from Cybertruck production to the Model Y assembly line.

To get rid of the stock surplus, Tesla has introduced a number of bonuses: buyers of the limited edition Foundation Series get free charging at Supercharger stations for the life of the vehicle, and leasing rates for the pickup truck have dropped noticeably.
