Smart #5: Prices in Germany start at 45,900 euros

Smart has revealed details about its new mid-size electric SUV, including engines, batteries and and and charging information. Most interestingly, the electric car will arrive in Germany in 400-volt and 800-volt versions, just like in China. Order intake starts on 24 April with a starting price of around €46,000.
Here's What We Know
The Smart #5 is the third model in the new Smart range after the Smart #1 and Smart #3. Like the previous models in the series, the #5 is based on parent company Geely's Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) platform. However, the former mini and micro car brand is now in the mid-size segment and offers 800-volt technology for the first time.

Smart #5:
- 4,695 mm length, 1,920 mm width, 1,705 mm height,
- wheelbase 2,900 mm.
- main boot volume from 630 to 1,530 litres
- front boot volume (frunk) - 72 litres (in rear-wheel drive versions) or 47 litres (in all-wheel drive versions).
Engines and batteries
Previously, there was only general information about the Smart #5's engines and batteries. In particular, it was unclear whether the smaller of the two batteries with an operating voltage of 400 volts would be available. However, according to the new information, both battery types - 400-volt and 800-volt - will be available for the model in Germany. No other model on the market can boast such a choice yet.
The table shows all five versions:

The high charging power of 400 kW is impressive. In comparison, the Porsche Taycan and the new Mercedes CLA EQ charge with up to 320 kW, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 with up to 260 kW, and the Kia EV6 with a maximum of 258 kW.
The more important metric, though, is how long it takes to charge from 10 per cent to 80 per cent. Smart specifies less than 18 minutes. Hyundai, Kia and Porsche also have this figure at 18 minutes, while Mercedes has 22 minutes.
