At the GDC 2025 conference, developers from CD Projekt Red shared the details of the creation of the official REDkit modification editor for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. They said that for the implementation of this project, they had to practically rework significant parts of the game engine.

Here's What We Know

The Witcher 3 remains a popular game even 10 years after its release. In May 2024, CD Projekt Red released REDkit, a set of tools for modifying the game. However, as producer Oleg Shatulo noted, it took 10 months of work to redesign the engine, as the internal development tools were not adapted for use by the modding community.

The developers added new features such as "Projects" to help organise individual modifications. They emphasised that the official toolkit allows the community to continue to expand and improve the game, giving players the opportunity to create their own content.

And the creation of REDkit was a farewell to The Witcher 3, where players are now in charge.

As a reminder, REDkit is available for free to all owners of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on PC via Steam, GOG, and the Epic Games Store.
