After seven years of development and the successful debut of the metroidvania Animal Well, independent developer Billy Basso has announced that his next project will not take as long.
Here's What We Know
In an interview with Wired, he said: "Animal Well took seven years... I don't think the next project will take that long. I hope so."
Animal Well, released in May 2024, received critical acclaim and nominations for prestigious awards, including the Golden Joystick Awards. The game was noted for its atmospheric atmosphere and challenging puzzles that required players to be smart and patient.
Basso is already working on a new 2D game, which he said will appeal to Animal Well fans but will have its own identity. He emphasised that he is at the initial stage of development, enjoying the process of creation without external pressure.
The developer also shared that he plans to create a game in the same universe as Animal Well, but it will not be a direct sequel. He noted that he has a lot of forehead to think through when creating the first game, including details that the community has yet to figure out.
