Fewer and fewer people in the US support TikTok ban
Events surrounding the sale of TikTok in the US are developing rapidly. Although President Trump once defended the platform from being blocked, TikTok could still be banned. As the April 19 deadline approaches, a new report shows that support for a TikTok ban in America has significantly decreased.
Here's What We Know
According to a Pew Research Center survey, support for a TikTok ban in America has dropped significantly over the past two years. In 2023, when the organisation conducted a similar survey among 5,000 American adults, about 50% supported a ban on TikTok.
The situation has now changed: according to the latest report, only 34% of respondents support a ban. At the same time, the number of people who oppose the ban has increased from 22% to 32%.
Support for the ban among Republicans and Republican-leaning voters has dropped from 60% to 39% in two years. And Democrats have also stopped actively supporting the ban: their support has dropped from 43% to 30%.
Interestingly, TikTok users are much less likely to support a ban: only 12% of them want to block the platform, while among those who do not use the app, the figure is 45%.
Despite the sharp decline in the number of supporters of the ban, the fate of TikTok in the US is uncertain. President Donald Trump continues to fight to keep the platform alive, but extending the ban may not yield the desired results.
In the meantime, there are already several bidders for TikTok. In particular, according to the latest reports, artificial intelligence company Perplexity is considering acquiring the platform.
