US premium electric vehicle manufacturer Lucid has announced a recall of 4,294 branded all-weather mats for the Air sedan. It turns out that the mat on the driver's side can shift and cause the accelerator pedal to get stuck. Yes, it is the mats that are being recalled, not the cars.

Here's What We Know

According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the problem is that these mats do not have a hole to hold them in place, so they can slide under the driver's feet. They were manufactured until February 2025.

The only thing Lucid Air car owners can do now is remove the mat. Lucid said it will reimburse customers for its cost and offer a new version with fixation holes. The company has already started contacting owners to provide details about the recall.

The problem was first noticed back in August last year when a Lucid sales assistant noticed the mat shifting in a test Air. Since then, 13 such cases have been officially recorded, but the mats have never once blocked the accelerator pedal. Despite this, the company has decided to recall the accessory due to a "hazard that could prevent the pedal from returning to its original position."

The Lucid Air, introduced in 2021, remains the leader in range among production electric cars in the US, with up to 512 miles (824 kilometres) on a single charge. Thanks to its 900-volt battery, the sedan can be charged very quickly - up to 200 miles (322 kilometres) in 12 minutes at a proper DC fast charging station.
