Somalia is considering the purchase of Turkish T129 ATAK attack helicopters as part of the modernisation of its armed forces. This could be an important step in strengthening the country's defence capabilities.

Here's What We Know

Army Recognition reports on such plans, but there is no official confirmation from the Somali authorities or the manufacturer. Any other information about the deal, such as its cost, the number of helicopters, delivery time and specific equipment, remains unknown.

This news comes amid reports that Somalia is also considering purchasing or has already received Turkish Bayraktar Akıncı attack and reconnaissance drones.

If the delivery of T129 ATAKs takes place, it will be a significant strengthening of the Somali army's aviation component. According to Military Balance for 2024, the country's ground forces currently have only two Bell 412 helicopters. Open sources also indicate that Somalia received ten helicopters from Italy, including six Bell 412s (including one Bell-412SP) and four Bell 205As.
