Veterans of the gaming industry have created The CoLab publishing house that will actively support small studios
A new game publisher has emerged in the UK - The CoLab, which promises to change the approach to cooperation with developers. Founded by industry veterans, The CoLab plans to focus on supporting indie developers through close cooperation.
Here's What We Know
The CoLab's founders, Darren Newnham (former CEO of United Label), Mark Faulkner (former product director at Jagex), and John Lewis (former senior art director at Codemasters), have announced their first three projects: the story-driven simulation game Campfire by Team Emprenintes, the top-down cyberpunk shooter DeadWire by Shotgun Anaconda, and the strategy game Counter Clash by Bjenssen.
As part of its "commitment to ethics, teamwork, and transparency", the publisher also works with Safe in Our World, a charity that focuses on mental health in the gaming industry.
"We're all about collaboration and inclusion in an industry that desperately needs it," said CEO Darren Newnham. "Recent trends, such as massive 'greed driven' cuts, have highlighted the need for a paradigm shift.
"Publishers often put shareholder value ahead of gamers' needs, leading to a cycle of unfinished games released at inflated prices, while developers face challenges including project cancellations, unpaid work, and even loss of intellectual property."
Our goal is to make every developer who joins The CoLab an integral part of our team, creating a supportive environment that fosters long-term relationships and rewards
Only time will tell how it will actually work out.
