Developers from id Software decided not to include multiplayer mode in the new DOOM - The Dark Ages game in order to focus on creating a high-quality story campaign. Hugo Martin, the project manager, explained that the addition of multiplayer could have a negative impact on the main game experience.

Here's What We Know

In previous entries in the series, such as DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal, multiplayer modes did not gain the same popularity as their campaigns. Martin noted that the creation of multiplayer requires significant resources and can distract from the development of the main game. He stressed that players' expectations for multiplayer are high, and trying to implement it without the proper resources could harm the quality of the game.

The rejection of multiplayer allowed the team to focus on expanding the capabilities of the story campaign. In particular, DOOM: The Dark Ages will feature new mechanics such as using a shield to block and parry attacks, as well as the ability to control mechs and dragons.

DOOM: The Dark Ages is scheduled for release on 15 May 2025 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
