Apple is preparing a significant camera update for the iPhone 17 Pro, which could change the approach to zoom. Insider Majin Bu claims that the smartphone will receive a 48-megapixel telephoto lens instead of the 12-megapixel module used in the current iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max.

Here's What We Know

Apple may change the optical zoom ratio from 5x (120 mm) to 3.5x (85 mm).

At first glance, this decision may seem like a step backwards, but it has important advantages. The 85mm focal length is ideal for portraiture, as it allows you to shoot from a comfortable distance without having to move too far away. This is especially useful in indoor or confined spaces.

The main change will be the use of a 48-megapixel sensor for digital cropping, which will allow you to get images with more detail even when zoomed in. Apple has already used a similar method in the main camera of the iPhone 16 Pro, where, thanks to its high resolution, 2x digital zoom is possible without loss of quality.

The new telephoto lens on the iPhone 17 Pro can make shooting more flexible. Instead of a fixed 5x zoom, Apple is likely to rely on image processing and crops to allow for high-quality shots at different focal lengths.

Another important change could be the upgrade of the entire iPhone 17 Pro camera. If the rumours are true, the new product will be the first iPhone with a triple camera, where all modules (main, ultra-wide-angle and telephoto) will have 48-megapixel sensors. This will allow you to take even better photos in different shooting conditions.

Apple traditionally announces new iPhones in September, so in a few months we will know how true these rumours are.
