iPhone owners complain that iOS 18.4 broke wireless connectivity to CarPlay

Earlier this week, Apple released iOS 18.4. The fresh version of the software brought iPhone owners priority notifications, new emoji, three rows of icons on the CarPlay home screen and some other changes. But at the same time, judging by numerous user reports, it made it unbearable to interact with CarPlay.
Here's What We Know
iPhone owners who have already updated to iOS 18.4 are writing on Reddit and X (Twitter) that they are encountering a wide range of bugs when using CarPlay. While some users have stopped seeing the "Now Playing" text, others are complaining that the wireless connection is constantly "dropping out." For example, one Honda driver says that "it takes plugging and unplugging more than 5 times or restarting the car for CarPlay to connect." He cited reverting back to a wired connection as the only working solution.
The problems seem to have affected cars across brands including Honda, Mazda, VW, Audi and Ford. Users say they've tried various things to fix the situation, including re-pairing phones with cars, rebooting iPhones and restarting cars. Some it helped, others it didn't. But it looks like until Apple fixes what's broken in iOS 18.4, there won't be a fully functioning app.
One Reddit user reported that Volkswagen's customer support team has acknowledged the problems with iOS 18.4, but said it's Apple's responsibility. Apple itself has not yet publicly acknowledged the problems. Meanwhile, iOS 18.5 has already moved into the beta testing phase and is expected to be released next month.
