Poland has handed over another 5,000 Starlink terminals to Ukraine, providing communications for the military, civilians, hospitals, schools and critical infrastructure.

Here's What We Know

Minister of Digital Transformation Mykhailo Fedorov said that the new terminals will help residents of the frontline areas stay in touch, call their families, call emergency services and read the news, as regular communication is not available in the de-occupied areas due to shelling.

In total, Ukraine has received more than 50,000 Starlink terminals thanks to international partners and donors. Poland is the largest supplier, having provided 29,500 devices.

Kyiv is also exploring alternative communications systems, including Govsatcom, the EU's network of government satellites, which is expected to reach initial operational capability this year. However, it is a temporary solution until the IRIS² system is fully operational in the 2030s.

In short, the European Union is currently in talks with four satellite internet operators about a possible replacement for Starlink within the Ukrainian Defence Forces.
