Samsung has ceded leadership in the DRAM memory market after 33 years of dominance
Samsung, which held the leadership in the market of dynamic DRAM for 33 years, for the first time in its history lost the first place to competitor SK Hynix.
Here's What We Know
SK Hynix overtook Samsung in the first quarter of 2025 due to its success in the HBM (High Bandwidth Memory) segment, which has become key to new artificial intelligence and server technologies. According to Counterpoint Research analysts, SK Hynix took 36 per cent of the DRAM market, while Samsung's share was 34 per cent. Third place went to Micron with 25 per cent of the market.
SK Hynix dominates the HBM segment with a 70% share, securing NVIDIA's major orders for HBM3E modules. Samsung, on the other hand, has encountered difficulties in HBM production and has been unable to enter NVIDIA's supply chain. The company plans to accelerate the development of HBM4 chips to regain its position. However, analysts predict that SK Hynix will maintain its leadership in the second quarter of 2025, while the DRAM market will continue to grow due to high demand for artificial intelligence solutions.
