The Czech Republic has handed over the last T-72M1 tanks remaining in service with its army to Ukraine, so the country has completely withdrawn this type of equipment from its own Army.

Here's What We Know

The Czech media outlet Hospodářské noviny reports that the last 20 or so T-72M1 tanks were sent to Ukraine in late March or early April 2025. These tanks were in service with the 73rd Tank Battalion, which is currently without heavy armour and is waiting for Leopard 2 tanks.

It is reported that after the collapse of Czechoslovakia, the Czech Republic inherited 86 T-72M1 tanks. Some of them were upgraded to the T-72M4 version, while others were kept in reserve. After the start of Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine, these vehicles were put back into service and transferred to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

The country is currently conducting a large-scale upgrade of its armoured vehicle fleet. The Czech Republic has already ordered 28 second-hand Leopard 2A4 tanks, which have been upgraded by Rheinmetall. Another 14 may be purchased from Germany, bringing the total number of Leopard 2A4s to 42.

In addition, new Leopard 2A8s are expected to be delivered in 2027-2029. In short, the Czech Republic also plans to localise tank production on its territory with the involvement of local defence companies.
