BYD has unveiled two EV models with absurdly fast charging capabilities
BYD has unveiled the first two electric cars on the "Super e-Platform" in China - the Han L sedan and the Tang L SUV. The main chip of the novelties was the incredible charging speed, which almost equates the process to filling up with petrol.
Here's What We Know
Both models are built on the 1000-volt architecture announced in March:
- The Han L features a Blade battery with a capacity of 83.2 kWh
- The Tang L gets a larger 100.5 kWh battery pack
Charging speeds are impressive:
- Han L charges from 10 per cent to 70 per cent in just 6 minutes
- Can get 400 kilometres of range in 5 minutes
- A full 0-100% charging cycle takes just 20 minutes
The Tang L also shows impressive performance:
- 370 kilometres of range is added in 5 minutes of charging
- It takes 30 minutes to fully charge the battery from 0-100%.
It is worth noting that such performance is only achieved with BYD's new 1,000kW heavy-duty charging stations. The company plans to install 4,000 of these charging stations across China.
Prices for the Han L start at 219,800 yuan ($30,000) for the LiDAR Premium version and go up to 239,800 yuan ($32,700) for the LiDAR Flagship. Both versions are powered by a 671 hp electric motor with 420 Nm of torque and have a range of up to 701 kilometres. The all-wheel drive version of the LiDAR Flagship costs 279,800 yuan (~$38,100), has two electric motors with a combined output of 778 hp and a range of 601 kilometres on the CLTC cycle.
The Tang L is available in three versions priced from 229,800 yuan ($31,200) to 289,900 yuan ($39,400). This SUV is significantly more powerful than the sedan: the base rear-wheel-drive version has 788 hp, while the all-wheel-drive version has 1,100 hp. Depending on the equipment, the range is from 560 to 670 kilometres.
