After several years of development, tens of millions of dollars in costs, and two writing teams, the Tomb Raider series on Amazon has been officially cancelled. The project, which was supposed to become a new flagship of streaming, never received a final script.

Here's What We Know

In May 2024, Amazon Prime Video announced a series based on Tomb Raider, with Phoebe Waller-Bridge as a writer and executive producer. The project promised to be an "epic adventure series", and Sophie Turner was mentioned as one of the candidates for the role of Lara Croft.

However, according to The Daily Mail, the series went through two writing teams and spent tens of millions of dollars, but never received a final script. Sources say that the project is "dead", but there has been no official confirmation of the cancellation from Amazon.

This is not the first time that Amazon's collaboration with Waller-Bridge has failed to bring the expected results. Earlier, she left the adaptation of Mr and Mrs Smith due to creative differences.

Despite the cancellation of the series, Amazon Games and Crystal Dynamics continue to work on the new Tomb Raider game, which is being developed on Unreal Engine 5. The game promises to be the largest in the series, with a focus on story, exploration, and puzzles.
