Sony and Bungie studio held an extensive demonstration of the ambitious online shooter Marathon.

The developers reported a lot of important and interesting details, but we will focus on the main information.

Here's What We Know

Marathon will be released on 23 September on PC (Steam), PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series.

On the 23rd of April the closed alpha testing of the game will start. Everyone can apply for it, but the priority will be given to gamers from North America. Participants will sign a non-disclosure agreement and will not be able to stream or share details.

Marathon is an Extraction-Shooter set on an abandoned colony on the distant planet Tau Ceti IV.

Players will play the role of Runners - cybernetically modified soldiers who have abandoned their human form in favour of a biosynthetic shell and increased physical capabilities. There will be a total of six Runners (classes) in the game, but so far the developers have talked about four that will be available in the alpha version:

  • Locus - a soldier with the role of a tank;
  • Blackbird - a character with a set of skills for exploration;
  • Glitch - a nimble fighter who can get into the enemy camp, wreak havoc there and come back;
  • Void - a character whose gameplay is stealth-based.

As in all Extraction-shooters, the gameplay of Marathon is based on the standard principle: at the beginning of the match we choose a character, pick up equipment for him, land on the location, fight with other players and virtual rivals, collect valuable items and try to escape. In case of death, any player can collect all items and an ally can revive the character.

A team consists of three players, and up to 18 players in total.

Players do not have to choose different Runners and a team can be made up of characters of the same class, but this will likely not be as effective.

Marathon encourages team action, but it is allowed to ditch allies and try to play alone if you wish.
