Marathon will not be a replacement for Destiny, and if you are looking for a PvE experience only, the upcoming shooter is definitely not for you

Bungie's upcoming sci-fi extraction shooter Marathon is not intended to replace Destiny. Moreover, the game director of the project openly states that Destiny players who prefer exclusively PvE content may not find anything interesting in the new game.
Here's What We Know
In an interview with GamesRadar+, Marathon's game director Joe Ziegler spoke about the process of attracting players from Destiny, noting that there are certain differences between the two games and some barriers that developers can help to smooth out. However, "I think there are other things that we may not be able to [smooth out] to be 100% honest," he added.
Ziegler explained: "I think part of it is that we don't expect Marathon to be Destiny 3. Our goal is not to create a new product to replace Destiny 2. We believe that Destiny 2 has a future, and the team working on it is trying very hard to understand the needs of the players. But if you like Destiny, and you also like PvP and other games like that, then we think Marathon could be something very exciting for you."
Ziegler also acknowledged that Destiny players might have a bit of an advantage in Marathon, as "the weapon systems have some similarities, but at the same time there are enough changes that you have to relearn some aspects.
However, this doesn't mean that every Destiny fan will love Marathon and everything it offers. "If you're a Destiny player who has absolutely no interest in PvP, then this probably isn't the game for you because PvP interactions will happen all the time," the game director warned.
At some point, someone else, the same player, will meet you and shoot you
He later summed up: "I think if you are looking for a purely PvE experience, then Marathon is definitely not for you. We are quite calmly saying: yes, this game is not for everyone. It's a game for those who like PvP experiences, then it's probably something you'll enjoy."
Marathon is scheduled for release on 23 September 2025 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
