Why did Bungie decide to turn Marathon into an extraction shooter? It's because of the many different options for action that are becoming important in this genre
With so many failures in the extraction shooter field and titans like Hunt Showdown constantly dominating, a natural question arises: why did Bungie decide to take a chance with its Marathon shooter? The game's game director Joe Ziegler revealed the team's vision of creating a unique experience in this challenging genre.
Here's What We Know
For Bungie, extraction shooters symbolise this rare situation in gaming where you have many different options, and they all become meaningful in a strange way. During the game, you experience truly dramatic stories of survival. Every decision you make becomes either a cause for regret or a moment of delight.
This idea that there can be either an unexpected light around the corner or a dark abyss in which you will be destroyed. That adventurous aspect of trying to survive in a dangerous environment is extremely exciting and unique, and Ziegler thinks that's why an extraction shooter was the perfect game for the studio.
Because the studio loves to create these frantic FPS experiences that have uplifting and emotionally engaging moments - we wanted to take that to the next level with something like Marathon.
The team explained that with Marathon, they aim to create a social extraction shooter that is more enjoyable, accessible, and engaging.
Marathon is scheduled for release on 23 September 2025 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
