Chinese company SAIC's Roewe D6 electric sedan has set a Guinness World Record for "lowest energy consumption among production electric vehicles on the Qinghai-Tibet Highway" - 9.125 kWh per 100 kilometres.

Here's What We Know

The test route started in Lhasa and followed a 1,959.9 kilometre highway. The average altitude of the road was over 4,000 metres above sea level, with the highest point, the Tanggula Pass, at 5,231 metres. The vehicle also crossed the Kunlun Mountains, the Fenghuoshan Tunnel and other passes over 4,700 metres.

SAIC says the five-day journey took place in harsh weather conditions: permafrost areas, blizzards and freezing temperatures as low as -12°C.

The Roewe D6 is built on the second generation of the Roewe Nebula platform. The model is due to make its public premiere later this month at the Shanghai Motor Show.

The dimensions of the Roewe D6 are 4,792 × 1,828 × 1,496 mm with a wheelbase of 2,750 mm and an aerodynamic drag coefficient of 0.27 Cd. The car will be offered in two battery capacity variants:

  • 53.9 kWh, 105 kW (141 hp) front electric motor, 520 km (CLTC) range;
  • 42.8 kWh, 95 kW (127 hp) front electric motor, 450 kilometres of range.

The rest of the technical specifications have not yet been revealed.
