Taurus with a "but": potential German Chancellor is ready to give Ukraine missiles
Friedrich Merz, the leader of the CDU party and a possible future German Chancellor, confirmed that he would like to give Ukraine Taurus cruise missiles.
Here's What We Know
In an interview with the Financial Times and in a speech on ARD, Merz said that Germany should make a decision on the delivery in close coordination with its European allies, especially France and the United Kingdom.
In his opinion, the Taurus missiles, like the Storm Shadow missiles already delivered, can be used to hit strategic targets, including in the temporarily occupied Crimea and across the Kerch Bridge, which Russia is actively using for its troop logistics.
"Our European partners are already supplying cruise missiles. The British are doing it, the French are doing it, and the Americans are doing it anyway," he said.
At the same time, Merz insists that Germany must act in unison with its partners to avoid diplomatic risks and ensure maximum effect from joint supplies. He also hinted that the United States could play an important role in coordinating this step.
It is worth explaining that Taurus KEPD 350/150 cruise missiles are powerful precision-guided weapons capable of hitting targets at a distance of up to 500 km. Their low-observable subsonic flight profiling and tandem warhead ensure effective destruction of defended targets, including underground bunkers and command posts.
