Apple won't get exemptions from new tariffs, Trump promises new sanctions for tech companies
US President Donald Trump is preparing to announce new tariffs on semiconductors. This could have a serious impact on Apple and other tech companies, including chips from manufacturers such as Nvidia.
Here's What We Know
According to Trump, no company will escape the new restrictions, and Apple, like other giants, will not receive exemptions from these measures.
Recently, the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency released a list of electronic devices that were excluded from the current tariffs, including iPhones, iPads, Macs, Apple Watches, and other devices. This temporarily eased the pressure on Apple as it avoided the 145% tariff on goods imported from China and the 10% tariff on products from other countries. However, this benefit is not likely to last long.
On his Truth Social account, Trump said that "no one will get away with it" and that "there are no exemptions". Technology companies, including Apple, will "move to a different category of tariffs", including the so-called "fentanyl tariffs" (20%) that have already been imposed and new tariffs that may be announced in the coming days.
Trump also emphasised that his administration will be looking into the semiconductor and electronics industries as part of national tariff investigations to ensure national security. In addition, he has repeatedly stated that the US should resume manufacturing products domestically.
Consistent with previous statements, Trump has also suggested that Apple could start manufacturing iPhones and other devices directly in the US. However, even if this step would not be too costly, Apple would face problems in finding skilled workers to mass-produce devices, which would ultimately significantly increase the cost of the iPhone.
