Mitsubishi suspends car deliveries to dealers in the US
Mitsubishi Motors has temporarily halted car deliveries to US showrooms in response to ongoing trade tensions and new tariffs (duties) imposed by President Donald Trump's administration.
Here's What We Know
Mitsubishi's entire U.S. lineup consists solely of imported models. This means that an additional duty of 25% is now imposed on each vehicle. Although exports to North America continue, Mitsubishi has suspended deliveries to 330 dealerships in the US to avoid the extra cost.
According to Jeremy Barnes, senior director of communications for Mitsubishi North America, the vehicles remain in warehouses at US ports until the government makes further decisions on the tariffs. In comments to Nikkei Asia, Barnes said the company has enough inventory to meet current demand.
According to Cox Automotive, Mitsubishi had 79 days' worth of vehicles in stock in the US at the beginning of April - above the industry average of 70 days. The company is counting on a possible change in pricing policy before dealers' inventories start to run low. For now, there are no plans to raise prices for U.S. buyers.
Mitsubishi is not the only carmaker that has resorted to such a measure. Aston Martin, Audi, Lotus and Jaguar Land Rover also made a temporary pause in deliveries to the USA. Nissan has stopped taking orders for the Infiniti QX50 and QX55 crossovers, which are manufactured in Mexico, and Volvo is rumoured to be completely phasing out sales of the S90 sedan.
Despite the volatile international trade situation, Mitsubishi posted strong sales results in the first quarter of 2025. In North America, the company sold 31,637 vehicles, up 11% from the same period last year.
The Outlander crossover continues to sell best, with 11,992 units sold in the first quarter of 2025, although that's down 13 per cent from a year earlier. The updated version of this model entered the North American market at the end of February.
Interestingly, the second place in sales went to the already discontinued Mirage hatchback - 7,301 cars sold. Next come the Outlander Sport crossovers (6,910 units) and Eclipse Cross (3,731 cars).
