InstaVolt has introduced a solution to combat the cutting of electric vehicle charging cables

British charging infrastructure operator InstaVolt has developed CableGuard, a charging cable protection system that not only prevents theft but also helps catch the culprit.
Here's What We Know
CableGuard can be installed on both new and existing cables. On the outside is an abrasion-resistant flexible braid with increased cut resistance. Inside is a special compound that glows under UV light and is linked to a specific location via a database accessible to the police. Even if the cable is stolen or damaged, the culprit can be identified.
The cables have also been given a GPS location tracking system to detect unauthorised movement away from the charging station.
With such crimes on the rise, InstaVolt isn't the only one stepping up its defences. UK-based Evolt Charging earlier this year introduced a Cable Alarm system that responds with light and sound signals to an attempt to cut a cable.
Other operators have faced similar problems, with ChargePoint and Tesla also starting to use cut-protected cables to resist vandalism.
