Subaru has developed an external airbag that protects cyclists from hitting the windscreen pillars
Subaru has introduced an improved version of the external airbag on the updated Forester crossover for the Japanese market. The new solution was a development of the technology first introduced by the brand back in 2016.
Here's What We Know
Previously, Subaru has already installed external airbags on the Impreza, WRX, Legacy, Crosstrek and Levorg models. These systems were activated when hitting a pedestrian and inflated at the top of the bonnet, softening the impact of the head against the car body. However, this configuration was less effective in collisions with cyclists who were higher relative to the level of the bonnet.
The new cushion design now covers not only the bonnet area, but also extends up the sides of the windscreen to cover the front body pillars, one of the most rigid elements of the car. Subaru has also changed the way the upper and lower sections of the cushion are attached to ensure it stays securely in place in collisions with both pedestrians and cyclists.
According to the company, this is the first system of its kind in the world. While there have been previous attempts to protect cyclists with wearable solutions like Helite B'Safe inflatable waistcoats, these have not been widely adopted due to high cost and limited popularity in the cycling community.
The new product is available exclusively for the Japanese version of the Forester for now.
