Amazon is preparing to abandon Android in Fire TV: new Vega OS system will be launched this year
Amazon plans to switch from Android to its own Vega OS operating system for Fire TV devices this year. According to Lowpass, the first streaming device on the new platform will be released by the end of 2025.
Here's What We Know
Back in 2023, it became known that Amazon was developing Vega OS, a system that would completely replace Android in the company's key products. Although there has been almost no news about it recently, the development continued in the background. Now the company is actively engaging large media companies to create applications for the new platform, as Vega OS does not support Android apps - all applications need to be written from scratch.
Earlier, documents appeared indicating that an update of Fire OS based on Android for TVs was being prepared, which raised doubts about the introduction of Vega OS. However, the new data, including vacancies and information on app development, confirm the company's serious intentions.
It is unclear how Amazon will make the transition. Presumably, Vega OS will appear only on new devices, while existing models will continue to receive Android updates. The situation with Fire TV smart TVs raises even more questions, where a different approach may also be required.
As a reminder, the Amazon Appstore for Android will cease to exist on 20 August 2025. The sale of internal coins for branded applications has already been stopped, and they can still be used until 20 August. It seems that this idea was unsuccessful, and now the company will simply transfer its own branded applications to the Play Market.
