Russia is testing a new Volchanin ground drone on the battlefield in Ukraine
Russian propaganda sources report on the testing of a new ground robotic platform called Volchanin, created at the Volsk Military Institute of Material Support.
Here's What We Know
This is a so-called "logistics drone" designed to transport goods and evacuate the wounded directly from the front line. According to Russian media, four such platforms are currently being used at the front.
"The Volchanin weighs 600 kilograms, can carry up to 500 kilograms of cargo, and has a range of up to 30 kilometres. The platform is controlled through the Korshun digital system, which uses either a remote antenna or a drone repeater to communicate at a distance of up to 10 kilometres.
The developers claim that the system operates in the 1.5 GHz band with a so-called "floating frequency channel", which makes it difficult to jam, allegedly requiring a full-fledged electronic warfare vehicle. The platform is likely to be manufactured at the Ufa Tram and Trolleybus Plant, which was involved in the project.
Reports of the Volchanin development complement the overall picture of the militarisation of Russian industry: Russia is actively buying out shopping malls and other civilian infrastructure to convert them into production facilities, including for the assembly of drones.
