Bungie introduces us to the runners' mission with a mysterious intro and introduces the ONI AI that will accompany players
To coincide with the launch of the closed alpha test of the ambitious shooter Marathon, which will begin on 23 April, Bungie has officially presented an intriguing introductory cinematic. This short video introduces viewers to the mysterious Runners, their mission on the planet Tau Ceit IV, and reveals some key elements of the upcoming game.
Here's What We Know
The main goal of the Runners is to extract and evacuate valuable resources from the planet. Interestingly, the introductory video features the United Space Council of Earth, which played an important role in the original Marathon trilogy. Players will meet Runners belonging to this faction, and the way they interact with them is left to the players' discretion.
The biggest surprise, however, was the announcement of ONI, the mandatory artificial intelligence that will accompany players and help them transfer and reboot their consciousness into a new body. The name is undoubtedly a reference to the third-person cyberpunk action game ONI released by Bungie in 2001. Considering the cyberpunk style of Marathon, we cannot rule out the possibility of a connection between these game universes, or it is just an elegant Easter egg from the developers.
Marathon's closed alpha test will last until 4 May, and the game's full release is scheduled for 23 September for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
