It seems that the Academy has finally decided to implement a rule that has seemed obvious to many for a long time: from now on, Oscar judges will be required to watch all films nominated in a particular category before casting their vote for the winner. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced these new rules, which will come into effect this year.

Here's What We Know

Until now, there was a rather controversial practice when Academy members could vote, for example, for the best film without even watching all the official nominees in this category. This will now change dramatically, although the Academy's press release outlining the new rule does not provide any guidance on how a voter can prove that they have seen all the films (or whether they will even be asked to do so).

Another important change in the rules is the Academy's position on the use of generative artificial intelligence in film production. It is stated that the use of AI in the creation of a film "will neither help nor hurt the chances of receiving a nomination", and that "the Academy and each industry will judge achievement by considering the degree to which a human was at the centre of creative authorship in selecting the film for the award".

The Oscars ceremony for the 2025 season will take place on 15 March 2026.
