Critical spoilers for the second season of The Last of Us and the game's sequel are in the news!

Episode 2 of the second season of The Last of Us hid a special surprise for fans of the franchise - a cameo of the voice of Ellie from the original game, actress Ashley Johnson, which has a direct connection to The Last of Us Part 2.

Here's What We Know

According to EW, after Abby kills Joel and his body is taken back to Jackson, a special song sounds - it is a cover of Shawn James' "Through the Valley" performed by Ashley Johnson herself. Fans may recall that Johnson recorded her version of the song for The Last of Us Part 2's announcement trailer at PSX 2016, and it turns out that the song featured in the episode is a mix of that version and a "slightly updated" one she recorded recently.

EW spoke to The Last of Us co-creator Craig Mazin, who spoke about the process of bringing this song back for one of the most important and tragic episodes of the series.

"I've always loved this song," said Mazin. "I remember that trailer announcement and what it did to my brain and heart. Also, we have a connection with Ashley, not only because she created Ellie in the game, but also because she plays Ellie's mum. That's an interesting thing at a time like this, when the only parent you have is taken away from you and a parent you've never met, who you don't even know about, is watching."

As a reminder, Pedro Pascal jokingly reacted to one of the most brutal moments in the second season of The Last of Us: "I'm going to start playing golf."
