Approximately 90% of the barrels for Caesar are produced for Ukraine
The French defence company KNDS supplies 90% of the barrels produced for Caesar self-propelled artillery systems to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. This was reported by the French newspaper Le Monde.
Here's What We Know
Since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022, KNDS's production capacity has increased significantly. Previously, the company's factories produced two Caesar self-propelled artillery systems per month, but now this figure is six units with plans to double the rate to 12 systems per month by the end of 2025.
In addition to artillery systems, KNDS is actively expanding the production of 155 mm ammunition. At the plant in La Chapelle-Saint-Jourdain, the volume of projectile production has been doubled with the intention of reaching 100,000 units by the end of this year.
In January 2024, France initiated the creation of an artillery coalition for Ukraine. French Minister of the Armed Forces Sebastien Lecornu and Ukrainian Defence Minister Rustem Umerov jointly announced its launch.
The initiative provides for the purchase of 78 Caesar howitzers. Some of them are being purchased by Ukraine at its own expense. In October 2024, KNDS was awarded a contract to supply 12 Caesar howitzers, and in November, the French Minister of Defence announced that another 12 units would be transferred to Ukraine using €300 million from frozen Russian assets.
