20 years ago, on 23 April 2005, the first video was uploaded to YouTube - a simple 18-second video called "Me at the zoo".

Here's What We Know

This video, made by one of YouTube's founders, Jawed Karim, marked the beginning of a huge journey for the platform. In the video, Karim simply talks about the elephants at the San Diego Zoo, saying: "The cool thing about these animals is that they have really long trunks."

Now with over 355 million views, this video has become a symbol of the humble beginnings that have led to the world's largest video platform.

Fast forward 20 years and YouTube has changed beyond recognition. More than 500 hours of video are uploaded to the platform every minute. From personal blogs to billion-dollar music videos, live streams, documentaries, and even AI content, YouTube has become an integral part of our lives.

To celebrate the anniversary, YouTube added a small cake slider to the first video and an elephant icon that leads to Karim's channel. This channel has only one video, but already has over 5 million subscribers.

Today, YouTube is not only a place for videos, but also YouTube Music, YouTube Kids, YouTube TV, and YouTube Premium. Over the past 20 years, YouTube has supported 4K, 8K, HDR, and even VR videos.

Recently, YouTube banned two major channels that released fake movie trailers created with the help of AI. Such videos are captioned with loud titles such as "Official Trailer" or "Exclusive Footage" and are often so well made that it can be difficult to distinguish them from real trailers.
