In February, an Read and play: Ink Console, an unusual portable gadget for running text-based games, has been announced for launching text games with the effect of electronic ink was announced. In fact, it is a hybrid of an e-book and a game console, but the main nuance is that the novelty will run exclusively text games, which started the mass gaming industry and gave birth to the RPG genre.

Now another developer has announced a similar device, but in a more familiar form for gamers.

Here's What We Know

If Ink Console is more like an e-book, the new Figment gadget is made in the form of a familiar portable gaming console and received a 7.5″ horizontal display with E Ink effect and a small set of buttons for control. The gadget runs on an ESP32 chip and its body is 3D printed.

Figment is designed to be a text-only game, with generative AI allowing the player to go beyond a pre-defined story.

The current game engine uses a mixture of pre-written books/games and AI to fill in game paths that the author hasn't defined. So, for example, if you make a departure from the main storyline, image generation and LLM is used to build that storyline.

It is not yet known when and at what price Figment will be released.
