The Ukrainian military has been spotted using American 155mm M114 howitzers, which have been provided by Portugal and Greece in recent years.

Here's What We Know

A video of the howitzers was posted by Ukrainian soldier Dmitry MacKenzie, which is considered the first documented appearance of M114s in the Defence Forces.

It should be noted that Ukraine already has a number of these howitzers in service. For example, in 2022, Portugal handed over five of them along with armoured vehicles, but their use by the defence forces has not yet been noticed, while Greece received about 70 as part of negotiations with the Czech Republic in 2024. In March last year, the Greek Ministry of Defence said that this was probably the second batch to be delivered to Ukraine.

The M114 is a 155mm American howitzer developed in 1941. It was actively used in the Second World War, as well as in the Korean, Vietnam, Iran-Iraq wars and other conflicts.

Today, the howitzer is not used by most countries due to its obsolescence: it has a short 23-calibre barrel and can fire at a distance of up to 14 km. Overall, it is inferior to modern 155mm systems, but comparable to 105mm artillery.
