Kojima on the film adaptation of Death Stranding: "It's going to be an incredible and weird film!"
While A24 is working on the film adaptation of the cult game Death Stranding, details about the upcoming film are still scarce. However, in a new episode of his Koji10 podcast, series creator Hideo Kojima finally shared his first impressions, calling the upcoming film adaptation "an incredible and strange film".
Here's What We Know
Kojima spoke warmly of director Michael Sarnosky, calling him a nice man and the perfect candidate for the job. He also added that Sarnoski doesn't look like a typical Hollywood personality.
He says that director Michael Sarnoski is smart, has good taste and is a very nice person, so he is happy that he will be directing the film. According to Hideo, Michael had properly completed Death Stranding and Metal Gear Solid 1 and was about to play MGS2 and MGS3, but Kojima stopped him.
As a reminder, Michael Sarnoski was appointed director of the Death Stranding project earlier this month. Previously, Sarnoski worked on several well-known films, including A Quiet Place: Day One.
Information about A24's involvement in the production of Death Stranding was announced back in 2023. A24 is known for its work on independent films, which are often highly praised by critics. Some of the studio's most famous projects include All the Time, Lady Bird and The Whale. The company also has several acclaimed horror titles in its portfolio, such as Heredity, The Witch and Solstice.
"A24 was born about 10 years ago, their presence in the industry is unique, they are not like anyone else. The films they bring to the world are of the highest quality and most innovative," said Kojima, announcing the partnership with A24 on the film.
"I've always been drawn to their work, and it has even inspired my own work. Their innovative approach to storytelling is in line with what Kojima Productions has been doing for the past 8 years. Now we are making Death Stranding together. There are a lot of "game adaptations" out there, but what we're creating is not just a direct adaptation of the game. We want our audience to consist not only of game fans, but also of everyone who loves cinema. We're creating a Death Stranding universe that has never been seen before, that can only be achieved through film, and it will be born."
The 2023 report also reveals that Kojima is directly involved in the production of the Death Stranding film. His involvement includes production, supervision, story development, visual style, design, and content.
Meanwhile, Kojima Productions is preparing for the release of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. The game, developed exclusively for PS5, will be released on 26 June. So, while we are waiting for the "incredible and strange" film, fans will be able to dive back into Kojima's post-apocalyptic world this summer.
