Google has announced the launch of a free battery replacement programme for Pixel 7a smartphones that may experience battery swelling or very rapid battery drain for no apparent reason. This defect can shorten the life of the device and poses a potential safety hazard.

Here's What We Know

To participate in the programme, users must verify their device's eligibility by entering the IMEI number on a special page. However, the physical condition of the phone is also taken into account: if the device has significant damage or has been exposed to liquid, a free replacement may not be available.

The programme is available in the US, India, Canada, UK, Germany, Japan and Singapore. In countries where replacement is not possible, such as Australia, Malaysia, Taiwan, European Economic Area countries and Switzerland, Google offers alternatives including a $200 lump sum payment or a $300 Google Store credit. For devices under warranty, there is a refund of up to $456 in some regions.

The battery implosion issue has previously affected other Pixel models such as the Pixel 4a, forcing the company to take similar measures for the Pixel 7a.
