The Volvo EX30 became one of the most popular electric cars in Europe in 2024. However, due to production in China, the model was affected by additional EU tariffs on Chinese electric cars.

Here's What We Know

Now these difficulties are a thing of the past - today Volvo has officially started production of the EX30 at its plant in Ghent, Belgium.

This plant will also soon start producing the EX30 Cross Country model.

The move to Ghent will create around 350 new jobs, bringing the total number of employees at the plant to almost 6,600. Volvo has invested around 200 million euros to set up production. The funds were used to introduce a new vehicle platform, upgrade 600 robots, expand the battery shop, launch a new door production line and create a battery pack assembly line.

The Ghent plant, together with the plant in Torsland, Sweden, currently produces 10 different models of electric and hybrid vehicles. The Ghent plant, opened in 1965, is "the only fully developed car plant in Belgium," according to the company. Volvo is also building a third European plant in Slovakia.

In 2024, the Ghent plant produced just over 186,000 vehicles, including the EX40 and EC40 models.

Volvo recently introduced the ES90, its first electric model that is not an SUV. The novelty is positioned as the brand's technological flagship, which will compete with the BMW i5.
