BYD's fourth car carrier set sail on its maiden voyage to Brazil
On 27 April, BYD's fourth Ro-Ro (Roll on-Roll off) ship named Shenzhen officially began its maiden ocean voyage to Brazil, taking more than 7,000 new cars on board.
Here's What We Know
Shenzhen was launched in January this year in the port of Yangzhou, northwest of Shanghai. On 22 April, shipbuilding company China Merchants Group officially handed over the new vessel to customer BYD.
Shenzhen is 219.9 metres long and 37.7 metres wide, with 16 decks on board. The vessel can reach speeds of up to 18.5 knots (approximately 34.3 km/h) and carry up to 9,200 vehicles at a time. Shenzhen is equipped with a dual-fuel propulsion system that can run on liquefied natural gas (LNG) and conventional marine fuel.
BYD also operates RoRo vessels Explorer No.1, Changzhou and Hefei. A fifth vessel, named Changsha, was launched in March. It is expected to be handed over in May. Also in April, the Xi'an vessel was completed, but an official commissioning date has not yet been announced.
In the first quarter of 2025, BYD vessels transported more than 25,000 new energy vehicles (a Chinese term combining electric cars and plug-in hybrids). Meanwhile, BYD's total overseas sales during the period totalled 206,000 units, up 110% from the same period last year.
Brazil is the largest overseas market for BYD. Over the past two years, the company has become the fastest-growing Chinese automaker in terms of investment in that country.
