Some indie studios were shocked by the "shadow release" of the Oblivion remaster, as it instantly overshadowed almost all other games in the following days
For small indie developers, the release of a game is always an exciting event, the culmination of months of hard work. But what if your game, for which you have carefully planned the release date, is suddenly overshadowed by the unexpected launch of a remaster of the legendary Oblivion? Red Soul Games, the developer of the horror adventure Post Trauma, which was released on 22 April 2025 - the same day that Bethesda held its announcement stream and immediately released an updated version of the cult RPG.
Here's What We Know
According to Jonas Antonsson, the founder of Raw Fury (publisher of Post Trauma), when a "shadow release" of such a scale as Oblivion Remastered takes place, "everything else is more or less lost". Antonsson expressed his support for Red Soul Games, explaining that his company does not have the financial resources to compete with such releases, so every step, including the release date, is carefully planned to maximise attention. He also confessed his love for Oblivion, which he played in his youth, but expressed "pain for our team and especially for the developer we worked with for years, who put his heart and soul into his game." Although there are many games released every day, especially on PC via Steam, the release of a giant like Oblivion Remastered undoubtedly attracts the vast majority of attention.
Red Soul Games itself seems to be keeping a sense of humour and posted a video on Twitter announcing a new "spiritual release date" - 23 June. On this day, they plan to "re-release" the game with broadcasts and giveaways. The game itself remains available on all the platforms it was released on, but the studio is trying to keep up the momentum and continue to promote Post Trauma.
There were fears that Oblivion Remastered might overshadow the release of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, but this did not happen. Sandfall Interactive has confirmed that the new RPG has already sold more than a million copies, and this does not include Game Pass players. So, despite the unexpected competition, some projects still find their players.
Good things come to those who wait, so we'll be patient.
