Warning, there are serious spoilers for The Last of Us season 2 episode 2 in the news!

Joel's death irrevocably changed the world of The Last of Us, and it even affected the opening credits of episode 3 of season 2.

Here's What We Know

It was this tragic incident that triggers the events of the entire future story, forcing Ellie to leave Jackson to find Abby and her WLF group in Seattle. And if you were still in any doubt about Joel's fate, the opening credits make it clear - he's dead for good.

Prior to Joel's death, the opening credits of The Last of Us ended with two fungal growths symbolising Joel and Ellie, who together were fighting the effects of the cordyceps epidemic and a world turned into a fungal wasteland.

However, in episode 3 of season 2, we see only one mushroom sprout. Although Dina accompanies Ellie on her journey to Seattle, it is now Ellie's story, not Joel's.

This small but telling change emphasises two things: Joel is finally dead, and Ellie is now the protagonist of The Last of Us.

Recall that in episode 3 of The Path, the Seraphs, a religious group with distinctive scars on their faces, first appeared. Their prophet died decades ago, but they follow her teachings. This encounter hints at the dangers ahead for Ellie and Dina.

The episode focuses on Ellie's anger and her desire for revenge. She trains with Jesse, preparing to face her enemies. However, the townspeople of Jackson do not support the idea of a military expedition.
