An emotional journey on the big screen: a film adaptation of the hit RPG Clair Obscur is in the works: Expedition 33
No sooner had the recently released role-playing game Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 had barely won the hearts of PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC players with its deep story and original gameplay, when an ambitious project was announced - a feature film based on this exciting RPG.
Here's What We Know
The film will be developed by the producers who brought the world the successful Sonic the Hedgehog franchise to cinema, a series that proved that video game adaptations can be not only entertaining but also truly magical for viewers. The first Sonic film, released in 2020 and directed by Jeff Fowler, grossed over $320 million at the global box office, successfully combining action and humour with stars such as Ben Schwartz as Sonic and Jim Carrey as Dr Robotnik. The success was cemented by the sequels in 2022 and 2024, which demonstrates the team's ability to bring game worlds to life on the big screen. Their participation in the project gives us hope that they will be able to convey the depth and atmosphere of Clair Obscur.
Currently, an active search for a director and actors is underway, although no official names have been announced yet. The original game boasts a stellar voice cast, including Charlie Cox as Gustave, the engineer leading Expedition 33, and Andy Serkis as the intense Renoir. Jennifer English lends her voice to Maël, Gustave's adopted sister, and Ben Starr voices the mysterious Versailles. These actors, known for their roles in Daredevil, The Lord of the Rings, Baldur's Gate 3, and Final Fantasy 16, set the bar high. We wonder if any of them will return to their roles in the film or if the creators will choose new faces.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a turn-based RPG with elements of a real-time combat system set in an eerie world inspired by the time of the Belle Epoque. The story follows Expedition 33, a group of people from the island of Lumiere who embark on a mission to stop the Artist, a god-like creature who draws a number every year, wiping out everyone who has reached that age.
Thanks to the combination of strategy, stunning graphics and a good story campaign, the game has been highly praised, and more than a million copies were sold in the first three days.
The release date has not yet been determined, but given the early stage of casting and the search for a director, it can be assumed that the premiere will take place no earlier than in a few years.
