WhatsApp to get AI features that do not violate users' privacy thanks to new Meta technology
At the company's first conference dedicated to generative artificial intelligence, Meta announced a new technology called Private Processing for WhatsApp.
Here's What We Know
The option will allow users to use AI functions, such as summarising unread messages or improving texts, while maintaining privacy.
Private Processing allows users to use AI capabilities in WhatsApp without violating security standards, including end-to-end encryption. The technology will allow processing requests using powerful AI without transferring personal data to the cloud. This is similar to Apple's model, which applies its data processing capabilities locally on the device through Private Cloud Compute.
According to Meta, the technology runs on a special system that ensures confidentiality and processes data in a secure environment. As a result, users will be able to receive useful AI tips without violating WhatsApp's core principle of privacy. Meta guarantees that neither it nor WhatsApp will have access to users' private messages.
To ensure transparency, the company will allow third-party researchers to test the innovation and include this technology in the bug bounty programme. Although the exact timeline for the launch of this feature is not yet known, Meta assures that Private Processing can be used not only in WhatsApp but also in its other products.
WhatsApp recently added offline message translation in a beta version for Android.
