Tata and Foxconn start production of iPhone models 16 and 16e in India
India is becoming an important centre for iPhone production as Apple actively moves production away from China. According to Reuters, a new iPhone manufacturing plant has recently opened in India, and another is expected to launch in the coming days.
Here's What We Know
The first plant is a new Tata Electronics facility in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, which has already started producing older iPhone models. The plant is going to operate with a single production line, which will allow it to assemble a large number of devices.
The second plant under construction in Bangalore will be part of Foxconn's $2.6 billion investment project. The first production line at this facility is expected to open in a few days. The Bangalore plant will be capable of producing 300 to 500 iPhones per hour. It is planned to produce the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16e models.
According to forecasts, by 2027, the Foxconn plant in India will employ up to 50,000 people. At the same time, Apple plans to move the majority of iPhone production for the US market from China to India by the end of next year.
The move is part of Apple's global strategy to diversify its production and avoid customs duties on imports from China. However, the Trump administration is also actively encouraging Apple to move production to the US, where the company intends to create new jobs and invest in automation.
As a reminder, Apple is completing testing of the iPhone 17 before mass production.
