Samsung may be working on an unusual smartphone with an interchangeable lens. The company's patent describing a device with a modular camera has appeared online.

Here's What We Know

The document was filed with WIPO and has publication number WO/2025/084594.

According to the sketches, the smartphone will have a camera unit with a separate lens module, sensor, and actuator that allows changing focus or zoom. The system may also provide stabilisation or precise lens alignment. The lens can be removed and reattached, presumably with the help of magnets.

This is not an external accessory, like the Vivo X200 Ultra with the Photography Kit, but a built-in solution that can improve camera control and provide access to interchangeable modules.

So far, the patent only describes an interchangeable lens and sensor. It is not yet known whether Samsung plans to release such a device. The company could simply record the idea without intending to implement it in a commercial product.

Recently, it became known that Samsung is developing a smartphone with a flexible screen that stretches upwards. Unlike previous concepts, where the display is horizontal, Samsung's new design provides for a vertical expansion of the screen. This allows the smartphone to remain compact in your pocket, but to expand into a larger screen for work or entertainment when needed. According to the schematics, the phone has thin bezels with a distinct bottom, and the body looks thicker, probably due to the scrolling mechanism.
