The base Mercedes CLA is left without a passenger screen and other options
Like most carmakers, Mercedes-Benz presented the new generation CLA in the best-equipped version. However, with the launch of the configurator in Germany, it became clear: the base model looks much more modest.
Here's What We Know
The most noticeable change - the screen for the front passenger has disappeared. Instead of the 14-inch display, there is now a smooth black plastic panel with a pattern of small Mercedes stars. Despite the modern approach, against the background of previous cars of the brand, such an interior may seem too "sterile". The rejection of the turbine-shaped central air vents, which were a characteristic feature of the previous model, only reinforces this impression.
Nevertheless, the 14-inch screen of the multimedia system remains. Seats are covered with artificial leather, natural leather is offered for a surcharge. Among other notes of the basic configuration - only two buttons of windows and absence of physical controls of climate control. All controls are centred on touchscreen elements, including smooth buttons on the steering wheel, which has become a frequent but controversial trend.
On the outside, the entry-level CLA gets 17-inch wheels, with 18- and 19-inch wheels available. As this is an all-electric version, the size of the discs affects the range. Despite the simplification, the light clusters at the front and rear have been retained.
Also striking in the design are the numerous Mercedes stars integrated into the headlights and taillights, as well as in the decorative panel in place of the grille. This motif may seem overly obtrusive, but if the aim is to remind everyone that you're driving a Mercedes, the new CLA does it well.
According to rumours, such interior may appear in other models - CLA Shooting Brake, GLA, GLB. The hope remains that the upcoming "Little G" (a smaller version of the G-Class) will show more personality inside.
Prices for the electric Mercedes CLA start from 55,858 euros. For that amount, you'll get the 272bhp rear-wheel-drive CLA 250+. The 354bhp CLA 350 with two engines and all-wheel drive costs at least €60,381. The petrol version will go on sale at the end of the year. The internal combustion engine model is likely to be significantly cheaper.
