A unique version of the new BMW X3 (G45) - with an inline six-cylinder diesel engine and a 48-volt hybrid system (Mild Hybrid) - is now available in Australia. In other countries, this combination is not yet available.

Here's What We Know

When the fourth-generation X3 debuted last year, the model was offered with different powertrains depending on the market: a 2.0-litre B48 turbo petrol engine, a 3.0-litre B58 six-cylinder unit, a 30e plug-in hybrid and a 2.0-litre B47 diesel - all with 48-volt mild hybrid technology. All versions were initially available to Australians except the diesel version with the four-cylinder engine. But now another powerful modification has been added.

The new version is called X3 40d xDrive and it is equipped with an in-line six-cylinder diesel engine, combined with a MHEV-system. This motor develops 210 kW (285 hp) and 670 Nm - 15 kW and 50 Nm more than the previous X3 30d. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes 5.4 seconds, making the X3 40d faster than the petrol X3 20 xDrive and hybrid 30e, but slightly slower than the X3 M50 xDrive (4.6 seconds). In terms of torque, the diesel outperforms the other versions.

The new car is the second most expensive in the Australian line-up:

  • X3 20 xDrive - AUD 86,100
  • X3 30e xDrive - AUD 104,100
  • X3 40d xDrive - AUD 108,900
  • X3 M50 xDrive - AUD 128,900.

The new model defaults to the M Sport package, including 20-inch wheels, Comfort package, adaptive suspension, panoramic roof, adaptive LED headlights, M brakes with blue calipers, as well as BMW Operating System 9 interface with curved dual display (14.9 + 12.3 inches), wireless CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless charging and more.
