Volkswagen of America is recalling ID.Buzz electric cars because their rear seats are only designed for two people, but are wide enough to accommodate three. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), this is against U.S. safety standards.

Here's What We Know

According to the NHTSA, Volkswagen is recalling 5,637 vehicles that were manufactured between 18 September 2024 and 11 February 2025. The 2025 model year ID.Buzz's removable third row of seats has seat belts for only two people. However, its seating width exceeds the value specified for two passengers in accordance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 208.

The car maker said that to date, "there are no known cases of complaints about safety problems caused by overly wide third-row seats." However, Volkswagen intends to rectify the non-compliance issue with the free installation of modified interior trim parts. Hard plastic will probably be placed on the seat to prevent the third person from squeezing through.

The Volkswagen ID.Buzz 2025 model year electric minivan was released in the United States in November 2024 with a starting price of $60,000. This model has a range of 234 miles (376 km) on the EPA cycle and is available in several colour schemes.
