The legendary Ecco the Dolphin series is preparing a big comeback: franchise creator Ed Annunziata and the original team have announced three projects at once - remasters of two classic titles and a brand new game that will bring the familiar underwater adventure to life for a new generation of gamers.

Here's What We Know

In an interview with Xbox Wire dedicated to Asian Pacific Heritage Month, Ed Annunziata confirmed that he and the team are working on remasters of Ecco the Dolphin (1992) and Ecco: The Tides of Time (1994), which once became a real phenomenon on Sega Genesis. After the release of the updated versions, the authors plan to start developing a third, completely new game - it will be created with the latest technologies and gaming trends in mind, with an emphasis on modern graphics and mechanics.

Details about platforms, release dates, or gameplay features have not yet been disclosed, but fans are advised to follow the eccothedolphin.com website, where the countdown to 25 April 2026 has already started - probably, a major announcement or release of one of the projects will take place then.

The original Ecco the Dolphin became famous not only for its atmospheric graphics and music, but also for its high level of complexity and unique storyline about time travel, ocean protection, and the fight against alien threats. The sequel, The Tides of Time, expanded the hero's capabilities, allowing Ekko to transform into other animals and use multi-directional sonar.

After the release of the educational spin-off Ecco Jr. the series disappeared from the radar for a long time, and the last game, the 3D adventure Defender of the Future for the Dreamcast, was released back in 2000. Annunziata was not involved in this project, and an attempt to create a spiritual successor to The Big Blue via Kickstarter in 2013 was unsuccessful. It was only after settling the rights with Sega in 2016 that it became possible to return to the original franchise.
