The Ministry of Defence of Poland has announced the start of construction of the second Miecznik frigate at the shipyard in Gdynia.

Here's What We Know

The Miecznik frigate will be named Burza, or Storm. The ceremonial cutting of the first metal took place at the PGZ shipyard in Gdynia, where the first ship of this class is already under construction. This stage is not yet a keel laying ceremony, but it means the actual start of the ship's hull production.

Poland plans to build three Miecznik frigates based on the British Arrowhead 140 design by Babcock. Burza is scheduled to be commissioned into the Polish Navy in the 2030s.

The frigates will have a displacement of up to 7,000 tonnes, a length of 138.7 metres, a width of 19.7 metres, and a draft of 5.5 metres. The crew will be 100-120 people, with a total of 160 people on board. The ships will reach speeds of up to 26 knots and have an autonomy of up to 30 days with a range of about 6,000 nautical miles.

They will be equipped with weapons to counter air, surface and underwater targets. A 76-mm Leonardo Super Rapido artillery system will be installed as a short-range weapon, and 16 RBS-15 cruise missiles will be the main anti-ship weapons. The universal 32-chamber Mk.41 VLS vertical launcher will allow the use of CAMM missiles, and in the future - other types, including cruise missiles and interceptors.
